"What's the best diet to lose weight?"......Keto? Paleo? Fasting? The Straw Diet? Or anything that sounds like 'The 'something' diet'...Look there are soo many diets out there that claim these unreal results...and they probably do. Social media is saturated with all these "I lost 50lbs in 4 weeks with this.... diet"...and often play are your insecurities to buy their 'most popular diet plan'..
But let's take a moment and take a look at all these amazing (aka fad) diets. One thing is certain across all the most popular fad diets...they all cause some form of calorie restriction by removing a food group/source (note: calorie restriction (or deficit) is the key to weight loss/fat loss)....Check this brief summary below;
- Keto - restricts carbs (grains, legumes, fruits) to under 30g per day
- Paleo - eliminates diary, grains, starchy vegetables and refined sugars
- 5:2 Diet - two day calorie restriction (500-600 calories for 2 days, and normal for 5 days)
- Intermittent Fasting - 16 hour calorie restriction (includes no BCAA's)
- Straw Diet - only consume food that fits through a straw (and yes people would melt chocolate bars..ridiculous I know!!!).
So can you can why these diets are effective....but the question is how long for? Short-term? Yes....Long-term and keeping it off (highly unlikely)....
I like to always ask my clients something when they want to start something they've seen online/TV....CAN YOU SEE YOURSELF FOLLOWING THIS DIET FOR 12 WEEKS, 6 MONTHS, OR EVEN 1 YEAR?? Now if they answer to this, is 'no', ...then I tell them to not waste their time.
Hmm, where to from now?? Well, the answer is quite simple. The best diet for you, is the diet that you can sustain long-term. This is your best chance to
(a) Create a calorie restriction - essential for weight loss/fat loss
(b) Adhere - ability to follow as it feels less like an actual diet
(c) Choose an approach where you can manage short and long-term success, after all
(d) Aim to turn it into a lifestyle approach
So if you love carbs (breads, cereals, pastas) does it make sense to cut them completely out?? NO! Why bother? Find something that works for you, with the foods you like and enjoy. Dieting doesn't need to be super restrictive or eliminate the foods you like...you can make it work.
